ABOUT THE ASPCA:
The ASPCA was founded in 1866 as the
first humane organization in the Western
Hemisphere. The Society was formed to
alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we
continue to battle cruelty today. Whether it’s saving a
pet who has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass
humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse or sharing
resources with shelters across the country, we work
toward the day in which no animal will live in pain or
fear. Come and join us in the fight to end animal
cruelty.
THE MISSION:
The mission of the ASPCA to provide
effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals
throughout the United
States. The mission of
the Humane Education department is to aid in the
realization of the organizational mission by providing
relevant, quality materials, resources and programs for
educators, students and parents.
HUMANE EDUCATION:
At its most basic level, humane
education is about learning to care for the animals in
our homes and communities. It is about fostering
kindness, respect and empathy for both human and
nonhuman animals, and looking after the environment and
its diverse habitats. Unlike science and other academic
disciplines, humane education has a philosophical
component that strives to establish a sense of
responsibility and make the world a better, more humane
place.
